The construction company was founded by an immigrant, who was commissioned by Prince Shotoku to build the Shitin Ji Buddhist Temple. Congo Gumi was a family-run company for almost 1,400 years until 2006 when the company struggled financially and became a subsidiary of Takamatsu. Before the merger, it employed more than 100 people and had an annual budget of 70 million. It is still practicing in the Buddhist temples today.
Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan
The second oldest company in the world is Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan in a hot spring in the Japanese city of Hayakawa. It was founded in 705 AD. In 2011, it was recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest hotel in the world. This 37-room hotel has been operated by one family for 1,300 years. It is located near the Akaishi Mountains and draws warm water from nearby Hakuho Springs.
Hoshi Ryokan is a traditional Japanese hotel that was founded in 718, making it the fourth oldest company in the world and the third oldest hotel. It is located in the Awazu Onse area of Ishikawa province in Japan. The hotel is managed by a family of 46 generations.
The formal paper goods company, Genda Shigyo, was founded in 771. In 794, when the city became the capital of Japan, it relocated its headquarters to Kyoto. Today, its offices are located between Kyoto Imperial Palace and Njo Castle. This company specializes in mezuki, the color paper is folded into strings. These ropes are used in events such as funerals and weddings.
